About MINDBEBOP

A family of small apps for thoughts, attention, and mental navigation.

MINDBEBOP is a collection of tools for working with thoughts that remain active in the background, keep returning to attention, or make it harder to move mentally from where you are toward where you want to be.

This can include everyday experiences such as overthinking, rumination, replaying a conversation, mentally holding a reminder, waiting for something, repeatedly checking a phone, feeling stuck before starting something, or simply having a thought you do not want to deal with right now.

Different thoughts may need different relationships.

You might look at a thought differently. Give it another time to return. Give it somewhere to exist. Reduce stimulation. Create a temporary digital boundary. Or decide that there is somewhere you want your mind to go next.

MINDBEBOP provides different tools for those different situations.

Not Just Another To Do App

A To Do app helps you keep track of what needs to be done.

MINDBEBOP expands this approach beyond tasks to thoughts themselves.

A thought might be something you need to do.

It might be a concern, an idea, a recurring question, or simply an emotion expressed in words.

Not every thought requires action.

Some may need a place to exist. Some may benefit from a different perspective. Some may lead to Mental Navigation. Others may simply be left alone.

MINDBEBOP is not a diagnostic tool, a form of therapy, or a system for deciding what you should think.

Its purpose is to help you develop an intentional relationship with your thoughts and attention — whether or not anything needs to get done.

Which MINDBEBOP tool?

There is no required sequence. A person may use one MINDBEBOP app by itself or move between tools when useful.

If a thought feels heavy or keeps returning

MindFlipOut provides a place to hold a Heavy thought and create a lighter response or another way of looking at it.

This may be useful when a thought feels negative, fear-based, discouraging, repetitive, or difficult to see from another perspective.

If you do not want to keep remembering something

MindShoutOut lets you give a thought another time to return through a reminder.

Instead of repeatedly rehearsing something so you do not forget it, you can place it somewhere that can call your attention back later.

If you want a thought somewhere without solving it

MindBackyard includes Thought Space, where a thought can become a persistent Thought Block and be placed in a spatial environment.

You can approach it, move it, rotate it, change your perspective, or leave it alone. The thought can have a place without becoming a task or requiring a destination.

A Thought Block can also contain its own Nested Thought Space. You can enter that space, place other Thought Blocks inside it, and create further Nested Thought Spaces within those blocks.

This allows a thought to contain other thoughts without requiring everything to remain visible in the same space. You decide what belongs together and when to enter a deeper space.

Thought Space can also contain Thought Furniture — spatial objects that provide different ways of interacting with Thought Blocks. The first is the Workbench.

If you want less stimulation for a while

MindZoneOut provides a deliberately minimal space for taking a mental break.

It is for moments when adding more information, analysis, or activity is not what you want.

If digital activity keeps pulling you back

MindBackOut creates a temporary boundary by blocking selected apps.

It can be used when access itself is part of what keeps pulling attention back toward a digital activity.

If you know where you want to go but are not there yet

MindEntry provides Mental Navigation through Mental Steps.

You choose a Mental Destination — your Point B — and move toward it from your Current Position. Mental Steps can include actions inside MINDBEBOP apps as well as actions in the real world.

The destination can remain while the route changes along the way.

Common situations

The same thought can call for different tools depending on what relationship you want to have with it.

How the apps work together

MINDBEBOP is modular. The apps do not represent stages that everyone is expected to follow.

A thought may only need one tool. Or your relationship with the thought may change.

For example, you might first look at a recurring thought differently in MindFlipOut. You might decide that it does not need your attention right now and give it another time through MindShoutOut. You might place it in Thought Space. Or you might decide there is somewhere you want to go with it and begin Mental Steps in MindEntry.

The point is not to force every thought through a process. The tools remain available when a different relationship with a thought becomes useful.

Core concepts

Thought Noise

Thought Noise is MINDBEBOP's term for thoughts or mental signals that continue asking for attention even when they are not what you want to be attending to right now.

Mental Background

The Mental Background is a conceptual layer for thoughts that remain mentally active while your attention is somewhere else. MINDBEBOP provides structure for interacting with that layer.

Mental Navigation

Mental Navigation is movement from your Current Position toward a Mental Destination you choose. It is not necessarily movement through a fixed sequence.

Mental Steps

Mental Steps are small actions that can help your mind move from where it is now toward somewhere you want to be next. A step can happen inside an app or in the real world.

Stateful Mental Steps

Stateful Mental Steps can use information about what is true now — including what has already happened or where you left off — to determine what comes next.

Current Position

Your Current Position is where you are now within a Mental Navigation. It can change after each move.

Mental Destination / Point B

A Mental Destination is somewhere you choose to move toward. MINDBEBOP also refers to this as Point B.

Point B is not necessarily a task to complete. It can be a state, orientation, transition, decision, action, or other place you want your mind to reach.

Thought Space

Thought Space is a spatial environment inside MindBackyard where thoughts can be represented as Thought Blocks.

A thought can have a place before it has a destination.

Thought Block

A Thought Block is a persistent spatial representation of a thought inside Thought Space. It can be moved, rotated, approached, distanced, or left alone.

A Thought Block can also be associated with possible Mental Steps without requiring the user to take them.

A Thought Block can contain a Nested Thought Space, allowing you to enter the block and explore other thoughts within it.

Nested Thought Space

A Nested Thought Space is a Thought Space contained within a Thought Block.

Instead of placing every thought in one environment, you can give a Thought Block its own space containing other Thought Blocks and Thought Furniture.

Those Thought Blocks can contain further Nested Thought Spaces, allowing spaces to exist within spaces.

For example, a Thought Block named Family might contain separate Thought Blocks for different family-related thoughts. One of those blocks might contain another Nested Thought Space for thoughts you want to keep together.

You can enter a Nested Thought Space, explore its contents, and return to the space you came from.

A Nested Thought Space does not require you to organize every thought into a hierarchy or decide what to do with it. It simply gives you another spatial relationship to use when useful.

Thought Furniture

Thought Furniture is a class of interactive objects inside Thought Space.

A Thought Block can be placed on or used with a piece of Thought Furniture when you want a particular way of interacting with that thought. Placing a thought on furniture does not automatically do anything to it. You decide whether and when to use the furniture.

Workbench

The Workbench is the first piece of Thought Furniture. A Thought Block can be placed on it without changing or resolving the thought.

When you choose to work on that Thought Block, the Workbench asks: Can this thought give you something useful to do?

If it can, what you could do can become a Mental Destination and begin a set of Adaptive Steps in MindEntry. If you are not sure, the Workbench can let you look back at relevant information you previously chose to preserve in MindAnchors. If you do not want to work with the thought right now, you can move temporarily into MindZoneOut and return to Thought Space.

The Thought Block itself remains yours to move, resize, rotate, leave on the Workbench, or move somewhere else. The Workbench does not automatically decide that a thought is resolved, unimportant, irrational, or something you should act on.

MindAnchor

MindAnchor lets you preserve something from an arrival after Mental Navigation. It is not a score or proof that something has been resolved. It is something you choose to keep.

Cross-Dimensional Handshake

Cross-Dimensional Handshake allows selected boundary events in MINDBEBOP to connect with external systems. It is about transitions between environments rather than sending the content of a person's thoughts.

Mental Background OS

MINDBEBOP describes the larger architecture connecting these ideas as Mental Background OS.

The idea is not that every thought needs management. It is that thoughts which would otherwise remain unattended, repeatedly return, or compete for attention can be given structure when structure is useful.

A thought may need less attention. It may need another perspective. It may need another time. It may need somewhere to be. It may contain other thoughts in a Nested Thought Space. You may want to work with it through Thought Furniture. Or you may decide there is somewhere you want to go.
